APO 520 U.S. Army
SUBJECT: Bombing Summary and Results of Missions 1-16 inclusive.
TO : All Personnel 459th Bombardment Group (H).
13 April 1944
Broadly speaking, the 15th Air Force has a 3-point program. One objective is the knocking out of airplane production in Southern Germany and Austria. Another aims at the Italian railway lines carrying artillery and other death-dealing weapons to the Germans battling our troops in the fox holes of Anzio and Cassino. A third is directed at the transport system carrying shells and sour kraut to the Germans on the Russian front. That you have been doing your part well is indicated by the attached report which you are urged to read in its entirety.
Higher headquarters has extended official commendation as follows:
General Arnold “…excellent results…Budapest and Steyr…”
General Spaatz “…to General Arnold’s commendation I want to add mine…”
General Eaher “…Attacks on the marshalling yards one of the best”
General Wilson “…Splendid bombing of Budapest…”
In addition the 304th Wing has singled out the 459th Group for special praise in connection with our bombing of Maniago, Bucharest and Bologna.
Whenever we have to go back to knock out a target our work is increased 100%. Let us make every effort to dispose of each target complete on our first trip there.
M.M. Munn,
Lt. Col., Air Corps,
Commanding.

On 3 April 33 B-24’s of the 459th Bomb Gp rendezvoused with other units of the 15th Air Force in an attack on the M/Y at Budapest. |

Many tracks have been cut and considerable rolling stock derailed and damage in the M/Y and through traffic appears barely possible, but M/Y can be bypassed, as evidenced by trains moving or under steam at four or more points on lines skirting the M/Y. On the vicinity of the M/Y industrial damage is heavy, residential damage fairly heavy and scattered. The M/Y is well covered by craters which have cut sidings in well over 100 places and damaged at least 170 wagons. Oil Refinery completely inactive. On 16 April 33 B-24’s of the 459th Bomb Group rendezvoused with other Groups of the 304th Wing to bomb Brasov M/Y but due to bad weather bombed the secondary target. |
